Donald Trump’s “Shameless” Announcement – A Bid That Surprised All?
Suppose you have been living under a rock for the past few days. In that case, you probably do not know that the former president, Donald Trump, announced his bid for the presidency in 2024. This does not come as a surprise, considering that there would be no other reason he would call his supporters to Mar-A-Lago, according to many predictions. In his speech, he stated that his campaign would be for the people, not just himself.
His central vision seems to be, "I am running because I believe the world has not yet seen the true glory of what this nation can be. We have not reached that pinnacle, believe it or not," Trump stated. With this, let's examine why this moment is crucial for the Republican party.
Briefly, the first is with what occurred in the past week. I'm talking about the midterm elections, where most of his endorsed candidates lost the election. Some people in the party saw this moment as former president Trump being "shameless." After the disaster of the Republican's "Red Wave" and control of the House won by a thin margin, many people are questioning why he chose this moment, especially considering there are still 720 days until the presidential election.
This second is because of the 2024 election and the significant potential Republican candidate, Ron DeSantis, also known as the governor of Florida. In his campaign, he chose to steer away from Trump and not necessarily align or even mention his name when it came to informing supporters. We saw the effects of this last week when DeSantis gained around 59.4% of the total vote in the state of Florida. With this large majority within a heavily red-leaning state, it signals a shift in the party.
A shift that is moving on from the former president and his agenda. Though DeSantis supported Trump in the past, there may be a chance that the two may go head-on in the Republican primary election. The potentially high stakes of DeSantis's running bring into question what 2024 will be like for voters.
The reality is that there could be a division in the party. In the past, we saw many Republicans make this statement regarding Democrats, where some Senators were prominent liberals like Senator Bernie Sanders and Senator Elizabeth Warren while others were more moderates like Senator Joe Manchin. In reality, we see this division today with Republicans after the midterms, where many party leaders are unhappy with Trump's involvement in the midterm elections. This division may continue to grow into 2024 and lead to an interesting primary election, possibly forcing many candidates and voters to align with different policies within each party. It is hard to say how it will turn out, but until then, all we can do is watch, vote, and wait.
